anotHer dive accidenT in fisHing Trip

NST ALOR STAR : A fishing trip for 10 people proved a disaster when one drowned and another was found unconscious near Pulau Perak, 60 nautical miles from Langkawi, near here 23 October 2012. Rosli Mohamad Isa, 32, was believed to have drowned after he ran out of oxygen supply from his diving equipment. His friend, Harris Abdullah, 44, was hospitalised after he fell unconscious while trying to rescue the victim. Harris, from Gurun, near here, was admitted to Langkawi Hospital. He is also asthmatic and in critical condition. Rosli and nine of his friends went fishing in a rented boat when the mishap took place on Sunday. Rosli, a technician at the Sungai Petani Municipal Council, had decided to take a dive about 10am. His friends felt something amiss after Rosli failed to emerge about an hour later and Harris went to search for him. Friends on the boat panicked when they saw Harris and Rosli floating in the water. They fished out both men before alerting the Malaysian

FIX that Password

A few years ago I had to hack a couple of family email accounts after the passwords were lost. It took a few weeks, but I finally guessed the password of one and the answer to the security question of the other, which enabled me to change the password and recover years of vacation photos. This exercise showed me that when it comes to the security of online accounts, the biggest threats aren't necessarily viruses and spyware, but poorly chosen passwords, user names and security questions that can make accounts crackable by familiar people—and hackable by bad guys using common software. Retirees with limited tech-savvy can be especially vulnerable, putting them at risk as they increasingly handle their banking, credit-card and retirement accounts online, check their Social Security benefits, or access their health-care plans. According to the Pew Research Center, people age 70 to 75 had the largest percentage increase in Internet use in recent years. And regardless of their

REMINDER - Use the Internet with care or pay the price...

THE reports “ Tweet with caution ” ( The Star , May 15) and “Twitter users warned” ( The Star , May 13) highlighted that there is a heavy price to pay if social network users are not careful when posting conversations or in exchanging their views. As mentioned in the articles, in both Malaysia and Britain, there have been instances where users were brought to court and were penalised into paying damages (in fact, quite heavily) and also sentenced to jail for their tweets which were found to be defamatory and harassing in nature. Honestly, the social networks, namely Facebook and Twitter, being the most popular, are definitely excellent and wonderful interaction and communication tools. These sites, together with many others in the market, have helped enhance and ease communication, interaction and information – bringing individuals, families, friends, groups, communities and also business societies closer. At large, many in the world have benefited, both socially and commerc

Decompression Sickness & Scuba Diving

Decompression Sickness (DCS), as it is commonly know, is caused by a build up of nitrogen bubbles in the body. When we breathe underwater, approximately 79 of the air (depending on gas blend) we're breathing is nitrogen. As we descend deeper in water, the pressure around our bodies increases, causing nitrogen to be absorbed into our body tissues. Decompression Sickness is the term uses to describe the illness and effects that result from a reduction in the ambient pressure surrounding the human body. As long as the diver remains at pressure, the gas presents no problem. If the pressure is reduced too quickly, however, the nitrogen comes out of solution and forms bubbles in the tissues and bloodstream. This commonly occurs as a result of violating or approaching too closely the diving table limits, but it can also occur even when accepted guidelines have been followed. ( Like in the video above) Bubbles forming in or near joints are the presumed cause of the joint pai
